WRAIR's Psychological Health and Resilience (PHR) branch develops evidence-based knowledge products, interventions, and material solutions to enhance Solider performance and optimize the readiness and resilience of Soldiers across the deployment cycle. WRAIR's PHR is the DoD's gold standard for protecting the brain health of soldiers, safeguarding Soldier readiness, and maximizing Soldier lethality.

Research Areas

Mental Health Threats

Wound Infection PhotoPsychological Health and Resilience scientists develop and implement tools like the BH Pulse to monitor the prevalence of mental health concerns and to identify emerging threats to Soldier mental health.

Developing Interventions

Diarrheal Diseases PhotoPsychological Health and Resilience staff work to understand the neurocognitive underpinnings of stress-related symptoms and develop effective, validated techniques to improve occupational and mental health outcomes for Soldiers. These techniques are both for mental healthcare providers as well as mobile cognitive tools, available to Soldiers wherever they are.

Clinical Service Optimization

MRSN PhotoPsychological Health and Resilience researchers and scientists work within the Army Behavioral Health System to improve access, retention, and quality of psychiatric care offered to Soldiers. These trainings, programs, and tools result both in improved outcomes for Soldiers and more accurate readiness decisions from care providers.

Performance Assessment and Chemical Evaluation

Diarrheal Diseases PhotoThe Psychological Health and Resilience branch’s Performance Assessment and Chemical Evaluation (PACE) lab identifies neurobiological targets and pharmacological compounds that effectively promote behavioral, physiological, and emotional recovery from traumatic stress exposure.

Sleep and Performance

MRSN PhotoIn order to optimize Soldier health and performance by minimizing the negative effects of operational sleep loss, WRAIR conducts sleep restriction and deprivation studies and evaluates countermeasures such as sleep banking.
