Gorgas Memorial Library-Archival Collection

The Gorgas Memorial Library (GML) serves WRAIR and NMRC, supporting innovation to improve the lives of Service Members at home and abroad. We provide timely, seamless access to relevant resources, regardless of the original format or location. GML resources and services are available to scientists and staff located in Silver Spring and in the associated overseas labs.
 

Archival Collection Overview


The archives contain the papers and collection of Joseph Edward Smadel as well as other monographs of historical merit and material related to WRAIR history, including the critical early research of overseas laboratories, photographs, annual and research reports dating from 1862 and the WWII era, and working papers of selected military and civilian researchers and scientists who have made noteworthy contributions to WRAIR efforts.

What to expect when visiting the archives
Our procedures aim to protect the integrity of the historical materials housed at GML to preserve and ensure their continued access to researchers in the future. As such, please note the following GML policies:

  • Viewing the archival materials must be done in person.
  • Only U.S. Citizens may view the archives.

Visitation hours are from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm Monday through Friday, by appointment.
